This is most compelling for coronary heart disease (CHD) and, combined with the high prevalence of inactivity,1 provides the rationale for Professor Morris's claim that exercise is 'today's best buy in public health'.2 Besides a reduced risk of CHD, evidence is secure for many other health gains from physical activity; these include a reduced risk of stroke,3,4 type II diabetes,5,6 colon cancer,7,8 and hip fracture.9,10 There is evidence enough to justify the further development of public health policies to promote physical activity.

(Jump down to read a review of Rush Home Road) "The Girls"(Reviewed by Pat Neuman NOV 16, 2006) "“… I wouldn’t live a thousand lives, but a million to infinity, to live the life I’ve lived as me. I am Rose Darlen of Baldoon County. Beloved sister of Ruby. The world’s oldest surviving craniopagus twins. Aunt Lovey and Uncle Stash were right. How lucky Ruby and I have been to be ‘The Girls.’"In spite of reading some outstanding reviews of this novel and being a big admirer of Lori Lansens’ previous book, Rush Home Road, I admit that I had some misgivings about reading The Girls – primarily due to the subject matter. How could the average person relate to an autobiography of conjoined twins? The concept seemed depressing – and besides – how much of a “real” life could they have led. I was wrong on so many counts. Lansens has not sensationalized their story, but treated every aspect with sensitivity and dignity, providing only enough of the details to understand both the challenges and solutions “the girls” achieved in their lives.

(NTC/Rodger Mallison) WICHITA FALLS — As a child walks into the front office of the elementary campus of Notre Dame Catholic School on a typical day in January with a note from her teacher, Secretary Susie Garcia calls out to Assistant Principal Rachel Gutgsell, “We’ve got another one.”“How did you receive your award?” Garcia asks the child. When she responds too softly to be heard, Garcia reads the note, “You demonstrated the virtue of sincerity by saying kind words to your friends.”“My friends shared their books with me,” she responds.“When I accepted the role of assistant principal, I knew the importance of positively interacting with our students,” said Gutgsell.“Not only do students visit my office when they’ve made poor choices, but they also visit my office to celebrate those times that they demonstrate virtue in the classroom. And how better to celebrate than with a happy dance,” she adds with a smile and joyful laugh. “Ready?” Gutgsell asks the little girl. The girl shyly dances as Garcia and Gutgsell rhythmically sing, “woo-woo” and move to the beat themselves. Then they both clap and congratulate the girl.“Remember to take that certificate home to your parents,” Gutgsell calls out as the student leaves the office.Gutgsell said when she started working as the assistant principal at the Wichita Falls school in July 2018, her biggest project was to revamp the school behavior plan to make sure it was consistent across the grade levels, and not only address poor behavior, but praise and encourage the virtuous type as well.“At the beginning of the school year, the teachers and I decided upon common and consistent language regarding our expectations for students,” Gutgsell explained.

AbstractTraditional human rights concepts seem to fit Internet activity when it is broadly allied to conventional political mobilization and when it occurs in human rights-violating jurisdictions. Traditional concepts are strained, however, when Internet activity takes the unconventional form of ‘hacktivism’, and it occurs in human-rights respecting jurisdictions. Hacktivism is still activism but not always open or democratic activism.

British youths are 'the most unpleasant and violent in the world': Damning verdict of writer as globe reacts to riotsBy Lee Moran and Allan Hall for MailOnlineUpdated: 19:01 BST, 10 August 2011 British youths have been branded as 'the most unpleasant and potentially violent young people in the world' by a renowned doctor-writer.Anthony Daniels, a retired prison doctor and psychiatrist who has worked in some of the hardest-hit areas on the planet, said the British were now in great fear of their own arrogant, knife-wielding children. The author said Britain's young had a 'sense of entitlement' and were unwilling to change their ways for anyone else - with the only difference between the rich and the poor being that the former had the money to buy what they wanted, whereas the poor had to 'wheedle, cajole, swindle and steal it'.Writing for the New York Daily News in a comment piece on the riots, he said: 'Of course it is true that not all young Britons are unattractive in appearance and conduct, only a far higher proportion of them than of the young of any other nation.'It requires but an overnight stay on a Friday or Saturday in any British city to prove it. Even Russians are appalled by what they witness.'The rioting is only the extreme end of the spectrum of bad behaviour by British youth and young adults.'Mr Daniels, who often writes for The Spectator under the pseudonym Theodore Dalrymple, said the riots 'did not emerge from a cultural vacuum' but was rather 'the British way of life'.Comment: Anthony Daniels, a retired prison doctor and psychiatrist who has worked in some of the hardest-hit areas on the planet, said the British were now in great fear of their own arrogant, knife-wielding childrenHe claimed many American visitors to the UK were astounded at how quickly Britons became angry over trifling matters. And he revealed that it was now 'quite literally' difficult to 'distinguish the sound of people enjoying themselves from that of someone being murdered.'He said: 'Recently in Manchester, I woke at 1 on a Wednesday morning in my hotel to hear drunken screaming and shouting down below on one of the city's main streets, the sound of which continued until 4.30.'Lo and behold, when I left the hotel at 8 in the morning, I discovered that a man had been savagely beaten nearly to death at about 2 am and was still in a coma - but the drunken revelling had continued nonetheless, uninterrupted by the police.'So the sheer viciousness and destructiveness of the riots certainly do not surprise me.'He ended his piece by saying that the only thing that will stop the 'not well-educated' rioters is 'boredom or exhaustion'.Mr Daniels' piece, which will be consumed by a worldwide audience, heaps further embarrassment on the UK, which has today again made headline news across the world.Newspapers from Ireland, Iceland and even Iran have used the sickening images of the looting on their front pages. In the U.S. the popular Washington Post, New York Daily News and New York Times all dedicated extensive coverage to the events.Even regional newspapers, such as the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, which covers Little Rock in Arkansas, led on the riots with the headline 'British add 10,000 police as rioting starts a 4th day'.IRAN'S WARNING:Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is urging the U.N.

Writing a good book review is an art in and of itself, with the lofty goals of entertaining the reader, offering thoughtful opinions on the value of the book, and backing those opinions up with careful analysis. The best book reviewers are well respected professionals, whose opinions guide curious readers to new books that they’ll love but would not have otherwise picked up, or help them steer clear of those books whose covers and titles catch the eye but whose content ultimately disappoints. Book reviews are also an effective assignment for teachers who want their students to learn the skills of reading. It can help students focus on comprehension and critical thinking. Or maybe you are a graduate student trying to assess the breadth of existing research in your field and you want to do a better job reviewing the literature while you read it. Whether you are writing a review for school or you are interested in reviewing books professionally, the fundamentals of the book review are the same, and taking the time to consider the template of a book review before you begin reading can help you focus on and extract the information that will be essential to writing a useful and entertaining book review.Let’s begin by describing what a book review is and isn’t. Here’s a list of some of the most important things to consider while reading:The Plot (or idea): What is the setting and era of the book, what is the central conflict, who helps the central conflict towards a resolution, who prevents the resolution of the conflict, is the central conflict familiar or unusual. Is it symbolic or literal? Does the author make the plot obvious or is it hard to follow, why? What is the outcome of the conflict, or the central thesis of the idea, is it success or failure and what does the outcome say about the author’s opinion of the central conflict as a quest? The Characters (of topics) : what are the goals, quests, values, skills, motivations, and weaknesses of the characters? Do they develop or change.

Case Study: Stanley Australia The push factor for Stanley’s reform is acute industry competition, as their products are losing market share due to diagnosed factors like better quality and cheaper tools from Asian countries. Stanley Australia is hence inevitably under pressure from US headquarter in terms of improving cost efficiency and regaining market share within a compact time framework. Given these inputs, decisions were made by US parent company to reorganize the Stanley presence in Australia. The strategic change was a transformational one, which laid more emphasis on marketing and planned the demise of uncompetitive manufacturing operations.
“New York, You’ve Changed” is a new Scouting NY feature in which the New York depicted in movies is compared with the city of today. Not just the usual list of shooting locations, this is a full shot-by-shot dissection to see what New York once was and what it has become, for better or worse. We’ll be running Halloween-themed posts this week in honor of the holiday, and there seemed no better way to start than to take a New York, You’ve Changed look at one of the best New York City horror films ever made, Rosemary’s Baby.As the credits roll, the film begins with a panoramic aerial view of north-east New York, taken from the roof of The Majestic apartment building across the street from the Dakota (if anyone has a contact at The Majestic, I’d love to go up and shoot how the cityscape has changed).

(Click here for Part One) I have taken my time in writing it, gathering all my thoughts together, because I find this the most challenging. I am going to be speaking about “expression,” ways to efficiently express feelings and reduce the amount of held-in or “stuffed” energy. Safety requires predictive information.(I am used to being around people who are “ready to blow their pots.” The only reason I feel safe is because I have become trained in emotional expression.
Editor's Note: Commentary based on Sudore RL, Schillinger D, Katen MT, et al. Engaging diverse English- and Spanish-speaking older adults in advance care planning: the PREPARE randomized clinical trial. JAMA Intern Med 2018;178:1616-25.Background: Advance care planning (ACP) is the process that supports adults at any stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values and preferences for future medical care.1 When completed, ACP increases the likelihood of receiving medical care aligned with patient values,2 yet ACP documentation rates and engagement remain low.3 This is especially true for racially and ethnically diverse patient populations and non-English speakers.4 Therefore, an easy-to-read advance directive (AD) and a patient-directed, online ACP program called PREPARE For Your Care (PREPARE) were created in English and Spanish to address common barriers to quality ACP.5Study Question: Can a free, patient-facing online program called PREPARE For Your Care (www.PrepareForYourCare.org) and an easy-to-read advance directive increase advance care planning documentation and engagement compared to an advance directive alone?Funding: National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) grant (R01AG045043) and a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) award (CDR-1306-01500).
HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern and cause of death in many parts of Africa. Although the continent is home to about 15.2 percent of the world's population,1] more than two-thirds of the total infected worldwide – some 35 million people – were Africans, of whom 15 million have already died.2]Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounted for an estimated 69 percent of all people living with HIV3] and 70 percent of all AIDS deaths in 2011.4] In the countries of sub-Saharan Africa most affected, AIDS has raised death rates and lowered life expectancy among adults between the ages of 20 and 49 by about twenty years.2] Furthermore, the life expectancy in many parts of Africa is declining, largely as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with life-expectancy in some countries reaching as low as thirty-four years.5]Countries in North Africa and the Horn of Africa have significantly lower prevalence rates, as their populations typically engage in fewer high-risk cultural patterns that have been implicated in the virus' spread in Sub-Saharan Africa.6]7]Southern Africa is the worst affected region on the continent.
118SHARESRecent genetic studies have shown that Neanderthal DNA spanning at least 20% of their ancient genome survives in modern humans of non-African ancestry. If you are of European or Asian heritage, then around 2% of your genome originated from Neanderthals. This legacy was picked up from 60 – 80,000 years ago, when successive waves of modern humans began migrating from Africa into Asia and Europe, encountering and interbreeding with their Neanderthal cousins who had evolved there from around 250,000 years ago.Their hybrid children bore genes from both lineages, but eventually modern human genes diluted Neanderthal genes to the extent that the species seemed to disappear from the archaeological record around 30,000 years ago. Those Neanderthal genetic mutations which were not beneficial to modern humans were partially swept out by natural selection over time. The remnants are alive in the genomes of Europeans and Asians today. If you exhibit any of the following traits, they may just be an echo of your inner Neanderthal: 1. Occipital bunThe occipital bun was a knot of rounded bone at the back of the Neanderthal skull and may have been an adaptation for the attachment of their massive neck and jaw muscles. Vestiges of the occipital bun were common in early modern European skulls, but are relatively rare among Europeans today.(Image and cool haircut courtesy of Kenji) 2.

One of the major barriers preventing widespread use of stem cells in therapeutic clinics is the great difficulty of collecting a large number of stem cells from any single person. But this isn’t because our bodies don’t have many stem cells; they are, in fact, present in most tissues. Rather, there are few tissues that freely shed their cells on a regular basis and in great quantity.Consequently, stem cells must often be harvested using an invasive procedure.
Conjugating the Irregular Spanish Verb Ser (to Be)Spanish verbs fall into different groups, and each group is conjugated a little differently. If you’re going to master Spanish verbs like ser, you need to be able to identify which group a verb belongs to: regular(follows regular conjugation rules for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs), stem-changing (morphs depending on how you use it in a sentence), spelling-changing (has consonant-spelling changes in some forms to follow pronunciation rules), or reflexive (reflects the action back on the subject of the sentence). But then there are those verbs that refuse to be lumped into a category: the irregulars.
Plagiarism: What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid ItWhat is Plagiarism and Why is it Important? In college courses, we are continually engaged with other people's ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information. How Can Students Avoid Plagiarism? To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you useanother person's idea, opinion, or theory;any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of information—that are not common knowledge;quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words; orparaphrase of another person's spoken or written words. These guidelines are taken from the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct. To help you recognize what plagiarism looks like and what strategies you can use to avoid it, select one of the following links or scroll down to the appropriate topic. How to Recognize Unacceptable and Acceptable ParaphrasesHere's the ORIGINAL text, from page 1 of Lizzie Borden: A Case Book of Family and Crime in the 1890s by Joyce Williams et al.:The rise of industry, the growth of cities, and the expansion of the population were the three great developments of late nineteenth century American history.

This activity is being seen as less socially acceptable than it was in the past.4]Cigarette smoking on college campuses has become an important public health issue and there has been increase in campus wide smoking bans and other preventative programs to reduce the rates of students smoking. The cause of these bans are now starting to be discovered and there is controversy that goes along with implementing them across various schools in the United States.5] Protests against smoking bans are seen as a possible threat at schools such as the University of Vermont and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.5] Some smokers may also choose to neglect the bans and continue to smoke cigarettes regardless.4]StatisticsThe percentage of college students that smoke has fluctuated greatly over the years.

Alan Paton's work, Cry the Beloved Country has been hailed as one of the best illustrations of social breakdown and racial injustice in the South African Society. IntroductionThis post is going to cover several facets of the evangelical preacher known as Billy Graham, who died earlier this week. For those who are unfamiliar with him, here is a short introduction: Billy Graham was without doubt hugely influential in shaping society spiritually; politically; socially; and culturally; and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential preachers of the 20th century.Unbeknownst to many Billy Graham was a 33rd degree freemason, and as you will learn in this post, Billy Graham’s role as a church leader was to lead people towards the Roman Catholic Church and a One World Religion. In that regard, his real motivations were not aligned with the bible itself, but with freemasonry and the agenda of the Roman Catholic Church. That might sound crazy for some readers, but what you will see in this post is:Evidence of Billy Graham being a freemason;Evidence of his connection to the Vatican / Catholic Church;Evidence that he was promoting a One World Religion;Quotes from his book “Angels” where he promotes the false “alien” narrative;Links between Billy Graham and MK Ultra; andNumerical breakdown of his death, including 13, 33, 777, 9/11, 101, and Skull & Bones (using analysis similar to earlier work you can find on this website in the “News By The Numbers” menu in the header at the top of this page).
